ADC Slams Tinubu Over Criticism of Opposition, Raises Concerns on Economy and 2027 Elections
Opposition party accuses President of worsening hardship and warns against alleged electoral manipulation claims
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded sharply to recent comments made by President Bola Tinubu, accusing his administration of deepening Nigeria’s economic and security challenges while warning against what it described as early signs of attempts to influence the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the President’s remarks criticizing opposition parties as lacking vision were “ironic and unfortunate” given the current state of the country.
The reaction followed Tinubu’s comments during his acceptance speech after emerging as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he reportedly described opposition leaders as incapable of moving the country forward.
The opposition party argued that Nigeria is currently facing severe economic pressure, rising insecurity, and widespread hardship, which it attributed to policy decisions under the present administration.
According to the ADC, many citizens are struggling with rising food prices, unemployment, and declining living standards, while insecurity continues to affect farming communities and rural areas across the country.
The party claimed that millions of households have been forced to reduce their daily consumption due to inflation and worsening economic conditions, adding that businesses are also under pressure from high operational costs.
Concerns over economic reforms and living conditions
The statement also referenced key economic reforms introduced since 2023, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange market adjustments. While the government maintains that these policies are aimed at stabilising the economy, the ADC argued that they have contributed to inflation, currency depreciation, and increased financial hardship for citizens.
The party insisted that the opposition should not be blamed for current economic challenges, stating that issues such as insecurity, food shortages, and economic instability predate political criticism from rival parties.
The ADC also raised concerns over the reported outcome of the APC presidential primary, particularly the figure attributed to President Tinubu’s victory, which it described as questionable and potentially politically motivated.
The party suggested that such developments could be used to shape public perception ahead of the 2027 general elections, although it provided no evidence to support the claim.
As of the time of reporting, the All Progressives Congress (APC) had not issued an official response to the allegations made by the ADC.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu has previously acknowledged that ongoing economic reforms have been difficult for Nigerians, noting that the measures have also come with personal and national sacrifices.
