Telecom giant records higher earnings and increased government contributions in 2025

MTN Nigeria paid N878.7bn in taxes, levies, and duties to federal and state authorities in the 2025 financial year, according to the company’s latest sustainability report.

The figure represents a 15 per cent increase from the previous year and comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to boost non-oil revenue and strengthen tax collection under ongoing fiscal reforms.

Tax contributions rise over two years
According to the report, MTN Nigeria’s tax payments increased steadily over the last two years.
The company disclosed that it paid N543.9bn in taxes and levies in 2023 before the amount rose to N764bn in 2024. By 2025, total remittances climbed further to N878.7bn.

The payments covered company income tax, value-added tax, import duties, spectrum fees, Nigerian Communications Commission levies, and contributions under infrastructure tax schemes.

Revenue and profit improve
The increase in tax contributions followed improved financial performance by the telecom operator during the 2025 financial year.

MTN Nigeria reported a profit after tax of N1.11tn, recovering from previous forex-related losses, while total revenue increased by 54.8 per cent to N5.20tn.
Operating profit also rose significantly to N2.08tn from N778.2bn recorded in the previous year.

The company also disclosed participation in the Federal Government’s Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme, including a commitment of N202.8bn for the reconstruction of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
According to the report, the Rural and Urban Terrestrial Infrastructure project reached 50 per cent completion after approval of additional tax credits aimed at expanding fibre and telecommunications infrastructure.

MTN added that 62 per cent of its procurement spending in 2025 went to Nigerian suppliers, reflecting increased local participation in sectors such as construction, logistics, software services, and power infrastructure.

The telecom company said its operational footprint expanded to 2,087 active base stations nationwide during the year.

Active mobile subscribers reportedly reached 85.4 million by the third quarter of 2025, while active data users rose to 51.1 million.
The company also renewed its 800MHz spectrum licence for another 10 years, extending validity to December 2034.
