Gabriel’s missed spot-kick proves costly as Paris Saint-Germain edge Arsenal in a dramatic Champions League final shootout.

Arsenal’s dream of winning their first-ever UEFA Champions League title ended in heartbreak after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

The Gunners came within touching distance of European glory after executing a disciplined game plan that frustrated the French champions for much of the contest. However, their hopes were ultimately dashed when Gabriel Magalhães missed the decisive penalty, handing PSG a 4-3 shootout victory and a second consecutive Champions League crown.

Mikel Arteta’s side made the perfect start when Kai Havertz capitalised on a breakaway opportunity to score in the sixth minute, giving Arsenal an early lead against the run of play.

Despite enjoying limited possession, Arsenal defended resolutely and looked set to pull off a famous victory. PSG, however, continued to dominate the ball and eventually found a breakthrough in the second half when Ousmane Dembélé converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Cristhian Mosquera.

With the score level at 1-1, neither side could find a winner during regulation time or extra time, forcing the contest into penalties.

Arsenal’s hopes suffered an early setback when Eberechi Eze missed his spot-kick, although goalkeeper David Raya briefly revived those hopes with a save from Nuno Mendes. The decisive moment arrived when Gabriel fired his penalty over the bar, allowing PSG to celebrate another European triumph.

Despite the defeat, Arsenal produced several standout performances. Gabriel and William Saliba were impressive in defence, while Declan Rice once again showcased his tireless work ethic in midfield. Youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly also delivered a mature display on one of football’s biggest stages.

Arteta admitted after the match that Arsenal must strengthen if they are to compete consistently with Europe’s elite clubs. The Spaniard called on the club to make important decisions in the transfer market and continue building a squad capable of winning major continental honours.

While Arsenal fans will celebrate their Premier League title during a trophy parade in North London, the disappointment of falling short in Europe is likely to linger as the club prepares for another crucial summer of rebuilding.
