Court Dismisses Suit Challenging Jonathan’s Eligibility for 2027 Election
Federal High Court in Abuja rules against plaintiff, describes case as abuse of court process
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to participate in the 2027 presidential election.
In a judgment delivered on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu ruled against the plaintiff, lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, and upheld financial penalties connected to the case.
The court also awarded an additional fine in favour of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
According to the ruling, the judge held that the plaintiff lacked the legal standing required to institute the suit, stating that no personal loss or direct injury had been established regarding Jonathan’s possible participation in the election.
Justice Lifu further noted that previous court decisions, including rulings from courts in Yenagoa and the Court of Appeal, had already addressed issues surrounding Jonathan’s eligibility.
The judge described the suit as frivolous and an abuse of court process before dismissing the matter.
The case had sought legal clarification regarding whether the former president could contest in the 2027 presidential election.
More details are expected to emerge following the full release of the court judgment.
