Former vice president records victories in early state results as collation continues nationwide

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the early frontrunner in the ongoing African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election following results announced in several states.

The primary election, which is being closely monitored ahead of the 2027 general elections, features Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen as contestants for the party’s presidential ticket.

Although the ADC national leadership has yet to officially release final nationwide results, figures announced in some states show Atiku maintaining an early lead during the ongoing collation process.

Atiku records victories in multiple states
According to results announced by party officials in affected states, Atiku secured victories in Gombe, Abia, Ebonyi, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

In Gombe State, the former vice president reportedly polled the highest number of votes ahead of Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

Similar results were recorded in Abia and Ebonyi states, where Atiku also maintained a strong lead during the early stages of counting. He was likewise reported to have led the exercise in Sokoto and Zamfara states as collation continued nationwide.

ADC primary draws national attention
The ongoing primary election is considered an important development within Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
Atiku Abubakar, who previously contested presidential elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), remains one of the country’s most recognised opposition figures.

Meanwhile, Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen have both campaigned on reforms focused on governance, economic growth, and institutional development.
Political observers believe the outcome of the ADC primary could influence future coalition discussions among opposition parties preparing for the next election cycle.

The party is expected to announce final collated results after voting and verification are completed across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.
