Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general election.
The result was announced on Wednesday night at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Abuja following the conclusion of the party’s nationwide primary election.
Atiku defeated former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the contest.
According to figures announced by party officials, Atiku secured the highest number of votes ahead of the two other aspirants.
Atiku calls for reconciliation within party
Following his victory, Atiku appealed to party members and fellow contestants to remain united ahead of the 2027 general election.
He urged aggrieved members to close ranks and work together in what he described as a collective effort to strengthen the party and prepare for the national elections.
The former vice president also specifically invited Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen to join him in building the party moving forward.
According to him, internal competition during the primary should not divide party members, stressing that the focus should now shift toward national development and future electoral preparations.
Despite the announcement, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the primary, raising concerns about the conduct of the process.
Party leaders, however, maintained that the exercise reflected the party’s internal democratic process after members across the states participated in voting.
